How to Ensure Your Invisalign Aligners Stay Invisible

If you are currently undergoing a course of Invisalign, you are probably doing so because they allow you to straighten your teeth discreetly. The clear, medical-grade plastic of Invisalign aligners means that you can go to work meetings, job interviews and social gatherings without feeling awkward about wearing braces. However, your aligners need your help to remain invisible. Certain foods and drinks will stain your aligners unless you take steps to prevent staining from occurring.

Are you worried that you might stain your aligners? Get used to carrying out the following habits and you'll be able to keep your aligners invisible.

Don't Eat or Drink While Wearing Your Aligners

Although this might seem rather obvious, if you eat or drink — even just a mouthful — while wearing your aligners, you could stain them, rendering them visible to the people around you. Many of the foods people eat contain staining molecules that will cling to the plastic of your aligners and discolour them.

Rinse Your Mouth Out After Every Meal and Beverage

Since the staining molecules in the foods you eat will also cling to your teeth and gums, you should always rinse your mouth out with water before placing your aligners back in. Otherwise, those staining molecules will attach to your aligners and cause them to become discoloured.

Drink Staining Liquids Through a Straw When in a Hurry

Liquids such as coffee, dark soda, green tea and tomato soup could leave your aligners permanently stained. If you are in a hurry, such as when you are racing from the coffee shop to work, and taking your aligners out isn't possible, use a straw. Although drinking hot liquids in this way won't be possible, you could make sure your coffees and teas, for example, are warm — not hot — before you consume them. That way, if you are on the move, you won't need to worry about staining your aligners.

Eat and Drink Noncoloured Alternatives

Yes, this might take some getting used to but you may have to replace your favourite foods and beverages with ones that don't stain. For instance, if you enjoy eating spaghetti bolognaise, you could switch to spaghetti carbonara instead.

Similarly, if you like to drink rum and coke while out with your friends, you should consider switching to a clear drink instead, such as vodka and lemonade. One added benefit of switching to clear foods and drinks is that you might discover a new flavour that appeals to you.

Although you will need to adjust your eating and drinking habits to keep your Invisalign braces invisible, you'll also be able to straighten your teeth discreetly. That definitely seems like a fair trade-off.
